A kitchen remodel has to be, from a normal household operations standpoint, the room that matters most. We have missed having a kitchen sink: washing dishes in the laundry sink in a dimly lit and frankly medieval basement is no fun. The basement is not a space where we spend much time: it's replete with bats, snakes, spiders and lizards. Suitable for storage and the washer/dryer, it isn't a sub. for the kitchen.
Still, whining aside, the room's going to be much improved. A built-in dishwasher as opposed to the clumsy "portable," a new really deep sink... it's going to be worth the trouble.
I mean, it is, isn't it?

Keep up the good work on both the house and the blog. Curious to see what is happening now. I feel a certain kinship in that your house experience is similar to my own both in history and state of repair.

I found this blog, by the way, searching for info about American Foursquares, specifically their porches. Your house looks SO much like mine, it ain't funny! (Major difference: our builder went with 4 dormers. Also, no one smacked a double-wide onto where the porch belongs.
We're guessing that, back in the (early '6os?), someone replaced the columns & balustrades with (very cheap) wrought-iron railings, then never bothered to maintain them. I'd like to replace them with something 'architecturally appropriate', except I'd also like a handrail for the stairs. I'm SO jealous that you have a photo from 'back in the day'!

Wow, it looks like they completely framed in the front porch in the earlier photo. If you decide to put the colums back, I highly recommend the resin ones - no rot, no bugs, and you can get them with a steel core for structural support if you need to.
Gee - I'd sure love it if you would give us an update sometime.
